When you look at
your body what do you see? Do you think positive or negative thoughts
about yourself? Perhaps you think that you are too short or too tall,
too thin or to stout, maybe you wish that you were prettier or that
your nose was smaller or breasts bigger.
All
of us have
looked at ourselves at some time or another and only seen the alleged
faults. Many people wish they were more like someone else and some of
you may have even thought that if you looked different you would be
happy. Society places a great deal of emphasis on appearances, every
day we are bombarded with television commercials, billboards, flyers
and even emails telling us that if we did
this or that to ourselves we would look better, be better and feel
happier.
The
advertisers force you to
believe that all of your happiness lies in
your ability to have soft, shinny flowing hair or full luscious lips
and if you fall short of that requirement you will be left by the way
side to suffer for not making the grade, after all pretty people are
happy people; right?
The quest for physical perfection even makes people with perfectly fine
features and bodies go through some extraordinarily bizarre and
dangerous procedures, just because “society” deems
them not good enough. If these trends were left unchecked we would
probably reach the point where we totally forget that what we are on
the inside is what really matters. Thankfully it certainly does not
have to be that way. But you must change your thinking now.
On India Arie’s first album 'Acoustic Soul' there is a song
called “Video” I love this song because it really
sums up the way I view my life and myself, it is also a constant
reminder that I should never allow my ego to take over the adorning of
my body. These are some powerful lyrics: -
‘Sometimes I shave my legs and sometimes I don’t
Sometimes I comb my hair and sometimes I won’t
Depending how the wind blows I might even paint my toes
It really just depends on what ever feels good in my soul
I’m not the average girl from your video
And I ain’t built like a supermodel
But I’ve learned to love myself unconditionally
Because I am a Queen
I’m not the average girl from your video
My worth is not determined by the price of my clothes
No matter what I’m wearing I will always be, the India
Arie.’
***
At first this song appears to be simple and not particularly meaningful
but if you take the time to really understand what this song is really
saying you will realise that the message is an extremely important one.
In this song you are being told that you do not have to do, be, say,
look like what society deems as ‘normal’ you are
free to make your own choices and decisions. If you do not feel like
combing your hair today, you do not have too. (A comb has not passed
through my head in eight years.)
If you feel like painting
your toes go ahead but if you do not want to
then don’t. The song is about non-conformity and being your
own person, recognizing that you do not have to follow the crowd and
let me tell you, realizing this is one of the most freeing experiences
you can have. Knowing that you can say NO, I do not feel like it or I
do not want to can literally change your whole outlook, you become
unburdened, unchained, unplugged.
Its just you, free as a bird, no longer bogged down by what
‘people’ will say or think about you, it is not
about becoming careless it is about becoming carefree. Shed those
thoughts about your imperfect looks, did God ever create anything that
was not Perfect?
You are unique and you are perfect, do not allow yourself to forget
that and do not allow others to convince you otherwise.
As I always say: -
“No Matter What I’m Wearing I Will Always Be
